What is GRE?
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a computer-based standardized test designed to assess a test taker’s readiness for graduate study. It is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test can be taken both at testing centers and at home.
The test is presented in two versions:
- The GRE General Test
- A GRE Subject Test that demonstrates knowledge in a specific area.
GRE scores are accepted across various fields, including business, law, and scholarship programs. Scores are valid for five years.
Structure of the GMAT
The GRE General Test consists of three sections and lasts approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes with no breaks:
Verbal Reasoning Section:
– Evaluates cognitive skills essential for comprehension and critical thinking.
– Includes three question formats: Reading Comprehension, Text Completion, and Sentence Equivalence.
Quantitative Reasoning Section:
– Assesses proficiency in interpreting and analyzing quantitative data.
– Covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
Analytical Writing Section:
– Measures the ability to express complex ideas clearly and build compelling arguments.
– Involves a 30-minute “Analyzing an Issue” task.
Subject tests evaluate your proficiency and comprehension in specific disciplines, including Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.
For GRE Subject Tests, the total testing time is 2 hours and 50 minutes for the math test and 2 hours for the physics and psychology tests.
