IB DP Geography

The DP Geography course promotes global awareness by exploring key global issues such as poverty, sustainability, and climate change through examples and case studies of local, regional, national, and international scope. Available at both standard (SL) and higher levels (HL), with 150 hours for SL and 240 hours for HL.

Course Highlights:

• Focuses on interactions between individuals, societies, and physical processes.
• Investigates how people adapt to and manage change.
• Describes and explains similarities and differences between places.
• Integrates physical, environmental, and human geography, blending socio-economic and scientific methodologies.

Aims of the Course (SL and HL):

• Develop understanding of dynamic interrelationships between people, places, spaces, and the environment.
• Foster critical awareness and complexity thinking regarding geographic issues.
– Understand how geographic issues are shaped by human and physical processes.
– Synthesize diverse geographic knowledge to form solutions.
• Evaluate the need for planning and sustainable development through resource management.

Assessment

The SL and HL geography courses have four assessment objectives. Students are expected to:

1. Demonstrate Knowledge and Understanding:

– Core theme: Global change;
– SL: Two optional themes; HL: Three optional themes;
– HL extension: Global interactions;
– Internal assessment: Specific geographic research topic.

2. Apply and Analyze Knowledge and Understanding:

– Apply and analyze geographic concepts and theories;
– Identify and interpret geographic patterns and processes;
– Recognize and understand theories and concepts in various contexts.

3. Demonstrate Synthesis and Evaluation:

– Evaluate geographic concepts, theories, and perceptions;
– Formulate and present arguments using geographic concepts;
– Evaluate materials with appropriate fieldwork methodology;
– HL: Synthesize and evaluate global interactions.

4. Select, Use, and Apply Skills and Techniques:

– Apply prescribed geographic skills;
– Use appropriate techniques for geographic research;
– Produce well-structured written material with correct terminology.
