What is Maritime English?
Maritime English is a specialized type of English that consists of Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP) and Basic English.
SMCPs are basic phrases that are used in normal situations such as mooring, as well as standard phrases and responses for emergencies.

The importance of learning Maritime English is due to the fact that:
– almost every vessel has a crew belonging to different nationalities. Therefore, this language is a tool for effective communication both on the ship itself and between two ships and the shore;
– maritime English facilitates trade, management and administration;
– ensures the integrity and maintenance of the ship.

Who can use Maritime English?
– cadets enrolled in a maritime educational institution;
– shift assistants;
– senior and junior officers;
– engineers, mechanics;
– radio operators;
– service personnel;
– lawyers, businessmen and shipowners.

To test the knowledge of Maritime English, there is an international exam – Marlins Test. It assesses the level of English proficiency in a maritime context and professional communication, using specific maritime vocabulary. Mandatory for seafarers at all stages of their career.
