What is TOEFL?

TOEFL is a test of knowledge and understanding of academic English. Designed mainly for students whose native language is not English and intend to continue their education in another country.
The TOEFL certificate is in demand in universities in the USA, Canada, and is also accepted in educational institutions in most European countries, Australia, New Zealand and Asian countries. The certificate is valid for two years (24 months).

The main formats of the event:

– TOEFL Paper-based Test (PBT) – paper version of the test. Consists of 3 parts: reading, listening and written answers to questions. Today it is considered a less popular format, and is preserved only in some Asian and African countries. The duration of testing is 3 hours;
– TOEFL Internet-based Test (IBT) – Internet test. Considered the preferred format as many universities and organizations request it. Consists of 4 sections: reading (read and answer questions), listening (listen to a lecture and answer questions), oral part, writing part (write an essay). The duration of testing is 3.5-4 hours;
– TOEFL Essentials – an interactive online test. Like the previous tests, it consists of 4 sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Additionally, at the end of testing, the student records a 5-minute video message. The exam has a multi-stage adaptive methodology (matching the test content to the test taker’s ability level), short, focused tasks, and combines both academic and general English. The duration of the test is 1.5 hours.

Why take the TOEFL?

The test makes it clear whether the applicant will be able to effectively listen to lectures, read specialized literature, write scientific papers, and take oral exams in English. It can also be useful to you if you are planning to:
– participate in international exchange programs and internships;
– immigrate;
– apply for a work or student visa;
– arrange grants, scholarships;
– develop and achieve the best results in learning English.

What TOEFL score do I need?

– TOEFL PBT – minimum result from 520 to 560 points.
– TOEFL IBT – minimum result from 85 to 100 points. Each of the 4 parts of the test is scored separately on a scale from 0 to 30. Less than 80 points for the entire test is a poor result. With such a score, it will be difficult to enter a good educational institution. From 110 to 120 points is an excellent result that will allow you to enter a prestigious university.
– TOEFL Essentials – measured on a scale of 1 to 12 for each section. The total score is the average of the scores in the four sections, rounded to the nearest half of the range. The best score is 12.

What do you need to pass the TOEFL?

– know the differences between English and British English;
– understand and read specialized books, articles, magazines, scientific papers;
– have good speaking skills;
– be able to analyze information and clearly convey their thoughts.
